Graduate Student Instructors and Research Assistants

All Ph.D. students at the School of Information who make satisfactory progress toward their degree receive a full-funding package, which includes a mix of graduate student instructor (GSI) positions and graduate student research assistant (GSRA) positions.

All doctoral appointments are 50%. They all receive a full tuition waiver and health benefits.

All GSI positions at the University of Michigan are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Graduate Employees Organization →.

Cal Lee (Ph.D.'05)

School of Information graduate student instructors are known for making the grade. Cal Lee (Ph.D.'05), above left, earned the Rackham Graduate School's Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award in 2004. He was cited for establishing strong, connected relationships with master's students during the students' first semester. Cal is now an assistant professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina.
